Our computer lab is equipped with software and devices designed to build communication skills. It consists of software programs including all 9 components of Fast ForWord, as well as other software programs. The lab itself contains 7 stations that are easily accessible and can be used as a cubicle to encourage focus. We have a touch monitor that enables clients to access the screen (similar to the way you would use an ATM) rather than using a mouse or keyboard. Also, we have eye-gaze technology to make our computers accessible to those who cannot physically manipulate a computer. It is run entirely by tracking the movements of the users eye. Finally we have available our device library that contains hand-held devices that are single touch operable.
For clients who lack the fine motor, sequencing, and spatial skills etc. needed to use a typical mouse, we offer a touch monitor. This enables a person to directly access pictures/words that appear on screen. Unlike touch windows that attach to monitors, touch monitors are accurately calibrated and give a reliable depiction of what the user intended to do.
The Eyegaze Communication System is an FDA-approved communication and control system for people with complex physical disabilities. The system is operated entirely with the eyes. By looking at control keys displayed on a screen, a person can synthesize speech, control his environment(lights, call bells, etc.), type, run computer software, operate a computer mouse, and access the Internet and e-mail. Eyegaze systems are being used to write books, attend school and enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities all over the world.
